We Are Seeking

Our Legal Team is seeking a Fixed-Term Senior Legal Counsel to manage contractual disputes and litigation across various jurisdictions, with a contract length of one year. You will play a critical part in mitigating risks and resolving disputes while working closely with internal stakeholders and external counsel. This is a high-impact role, ideal for a proactive and detail-oriented legal professional with experience in managing contractual disputes from initial breach through to settlement discussions and potential litigation.

 

This role provides an opportunity to work on high-stakes disputes that are critical to our business. You'll operate in a collaborative, fast-paced environment and contribute to resolving key challenges with direct exposure to senior leadership.

 

The Senior Legal Counsel role will be under a 12-month renewable contract

Responsibilities

  • Oversee all aspects of contractual disputes, from identifying breaches to navigating litigation or settlement processes
  • Simplify risk assessments for the benefit of the business, understandable to non-legal stakeholders
  • Develop effective strategies, including legal letters, briefs, and defense tactics for litigation
  • Effectively manage external counsel across multiple jurisdicitons, if necessary
  • Collaborate with multiple business stakeholders on fact-finding and analysis, in order to present the legal arguments
  • Approach disputes with creativity, focusing on solutions that balance legal, commercial, and reputational considerations

 

Qualifications

  • Qualified lawyer (admitted in any jurisdiction across south Africa or EMEA)
  • 5 years post-qualification experience (PQE)
  • Litigation experience in private practice, with additional in-house experience preferred
  • Multi-jurisdictional experience, dealing with customers in various countries
  • Proven track-record of managing contractual disputes from initial breach to final court proceedings
  • Strong contract analysis skills, with the ability to explain legal clauses in clear, business-friendly terms
  • Excellent communication skills, including the ability to craft persuasive legal documents and concise briefs
  • Excellent negotiation skills and a results-oriented mindset
  • Ability to understand commercial issues in the context of legal contracts
  • Fluent in English, with proficiency in French as a plus

 

Team Size / Management:

  • You will report to the Head of Legal with, with secondary reporting lines to the CFO and CEO

 

Travel:

  • Travel may be expected if necessary fo the resolution of disputes or attendance at litigation

 

Working Hours:

  • 9am – 6pm
